Last month was the incredible and affirming Feminist Porn Awards. It was an epic event that hosted many of the best porn producers and performers who just so happen to be women and feminists. Men are also included in the feminist spectrum but to quality for a Feminist Porn Award it must follow this criteria:

1)  A woman had a hand in the production, writing, direction, etc. of the work.

2)  It depicts genuine female pleasure

3) It expands the boundaries of sexual representation on film and challenges stereotypes that are often found in mainstream porn.

Being a feminist dyke pornographer myself I am familiar with the majority of the nominees and attendees. The primary contributor of this blog, Charlie Spats attended. As well as many of the people featured here on the site: Courtney Trouble, James Darling, Jiz Lee, Drew Deveaux, Tobi Hill-Meyer, Dylan Ryan, Tina Horn, some colleagues that were nominated but couldn’t be there, like Shine Louise Houston and Sophia St. James, and some who we have yet to feature on this site in a significant way, such as N. Maxwell Lander, Nenna and Jincey Lumpkin. The whole porn gala is quite the queer affair. We know our female pleasure, that’s for sure.

Being a member of this elite queer feminist porn gang, I’m not only super cool, but I’m also a starving artist. Queer porn don’t pay…much…yet. Being feminist and ethical porn creators, we all have top notch working conditions, great pay, and tons of heart and best intentions to contribute positive sexual images to the world for at least a living wage. It can be a struggle sometimes, but when you’re a dyke/queer porn creator the satisfaction of doing the work is the payoff. Nudge nudge, wink wink.

Now that the awards have been handed out, the parties are finished and everyone is back to the grindstone,  it is time, dear queer porn lover, to take out your wallet and support the people that invest their hearts and souls into creating smart and sexy smut for your viewing pleasure.

“Content Updates” are basically the same thing that Charlie Spats was doing with “Weekly Updates”. Same idea of letting you know the latest updates on queer porn sites and the like, but without the guilt that comes from doing the “weekly update” on a semi-monthly basis.

Here Comes Trouble

If you’re into queer porn then you very likely know about Courtney Trouble.  Courtney Trouble has been in the smut business for quite a while now. Having porn as her primary focus for pretty much all of her adult life. She knows her sexy queer porn images, that’s for sure.

And if you’ve been following her on Twitter or tumblr lately then you’ve noticed that this Queer Porn Icon is keeping herself very busy with the task of bringing the best queer porn to the world. You can expect to see many of her photos on her tumblr page, called appropriately, “photos by Courtney Trouble”. She’s been especially generous of late to provide a lot of photos of her work for all to enjoy.

I had the pleasure of meeting Courtney in Vancouver when she was in town to participate in a “Porn Swap” with me for the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. And my primary impression was that this woman works hard. And a lot. Clearly her business is very important to her and she is extremely dedicated to getting the work done and out into the world.

Recently, she took the step to become even more indie and created TROUBLE films. Under this new production company she is distributing her independent creations (so far, “Live Sex Show” and “Fuckstyles”) as well as forming business relationships with like-minded queer porn creators for video distribution deals. As of last month, TROUBLE films acquired the work of Tobi Hill-Meyer. Coming together with the intention to mutually benefit each other and work together to get awesome queer porn in the hands of the people, I can only imagine that this is just the beginning when it comes to distribution deals and queer partnerships.

A Remodelled Crash Pad

Hi. It’s Bren Ryder here. Charlie Spats, the primary contributor of this blog is a bit busy these days so I decided to step in and give you an update on what’s going on in the queer world of porn.

The Crash Pad Series: arguably the hottest in queer porn right now – just remodelled their website to improve your view pleasure. Items they addressed are as follows (as revealed in their press release):

* A completely new look.

* A feature-rich homepage that includes a calendar of upcoming episodes and events, along with social media links.

* Improved navigation site-wide, including a unified page for each episode.

* Preview images and, eventually, clips of every episode for non-members.

* The forums will be retired. Instead there will be a support form at the bottom of each episode and on error pages.

* Our blog will be Incorporated into the main site, with more frequent posts (including an “open thread” for each episode).

* The majority of changes will happen April 2nd, and the site will be down briefly on that date.

The site is up now and it’s got all the improvements in place.

This site is so chalked full of hot sex and sexy hotties. I love the “characters” section. With 7 pages of performers, you know you’ll find plenty of people to fall in love with. The “episodes” page is also a great improvement that lets you skim through all 18 pages worth of episodes. Damn, those San Fran queers work hard at their sex.

This amazing website has now become an even more amazing porn portal for hot queer sex.

Shine Louise Houston and I have had a slightly similar pathway when it comes to creating porn online for your viewing enjoyment.  But, let’s be clear. Shine is a porn god and I am a mere mortal. In 2006, I set out to create “real dyke porn” and when I heard a new film called “The Crash Pad” was coming to town and claiming to be just the thing I was also wanting to create, then I had to see it and talk to the visiting creator (Shine, herself).

Our pathways do crossover, but she seems to gets her work done a lot fast than I do. And I know that. I work at a snail’s pace. And I work alone, for the most part. At one point I was thinking (jokingly) that she was copying me and then beating me to the punch. When I first met her in 2006 she hadn’t yet decided to create a web presence. I was working on my website and launched it in August 2007. The Crash Pad Series website was launched June 2007. Doh!

And now! I’ve been working on updating the look of GoodDykePorn.com (for like a year, I’m damn slow!) and incorporating a lot of the same features and changes. And I’m hoping to be done by June. But, of course, Shine had to go and beat me to the punch again. Ha!

After much contemplation of this whole copying me / beat me to the finish business, I realized that’s not what’s going on at all. The truth is that Shine is my soul-twin. It’s really the most logical explanation for this same-same phenomenon. And it also explains why my other colleagues, when visiting San Fransisco, will  engage in orgies, night club parties, and queer share-houses, whereas the highlight of my trip to SF was eating BBQ steak at Shine’s house while discussing science documentaries. See? Soul-twin. It’s obvious. And, we’re the same age. And my middle name is also Louise (sssh, that’s a secret). So obvious.

Queer Porn hits Vegas: 2012!

This year saw the biggest queer porn posse to date in Vegas for the AVN Awards!

2012 AVN AWARDS: HISTORIC AND GROUNDBREAKING WEEKEND FOR QUEER PORN: QUEER AND TRANS VISIBILITY ON THE RED CARPET, NOMINATIONS, AND VERY EXPENSIVE HOTEL ROOMS.

As most of you know, this weekend was the 2012 Annual AVN Awards.  In celebration, the QueerPorn.TV cast and crew rented out an enormous two bedroom suit at Planet Hollywood in Vegas to host the largest group of Queer Porn Stars in AVN history! James Darling and Charlie Spats became the first trans men to walk the AVN Awards red carpet in 5 years, preceded only by Buck Angel in 2007. Although we got no wins, Queer Porn as a genre also got tons of recognition through nominations this year, including QueerPorn.TV’s monumental Best Alternative Website nod, making it one of the best weekends in Queer Porn History.
Since QueerPorn.TV was nominated for Best Alternative Website, we made sure to take on the red carpet in style. Babes in our red carpet crew included Sophia St James, James Darling, Maxine Holloway, Tina Horn, Charlie Spats, and Quinn Valentine. Wolf Hudson walked with cutie pie Presley Hart, while Arabelle Raphael and Akira Raine walked with the Burning Angel crew.

We also met a lot of amazing trans women working in the adult industry in Vegas, including BBW transsexual porn star Michelle Austin and porn performer and producer Tobi Hill-Meyer, who spoke alongside Nina Hartley, Sophia St James, and Dylan Ryan at the Smitten Kitten “Future of Sex Ed” Porn Panel.

While AVN as a whole may be focused on the marketability and popularity of heterosexual, cisgendered pornography – the trans men and women in the porn industry are becoming more and more popular and were to be found everywhere at the AVN Awards. It was thrilling to be surrounded by so many expressions of gender and sexuality. The mainstream porn world is the last place you’d look for it, but it’s there just under the surface. And it’s about to explode.

In line with these leaps and bounds in gender expression in the industry, we were super jazzed about James Darling and Charlie Spats being able to follow Buck Angel’s footsteps on the red carpet as the first, second and third trans men and so was Buck, who said “I’m excited to see more trans men in the industry and would encourage other guys who are interested in participating in this field to go for it! Congrats to James and Charlie.”

James told us about his honor as well and the huge leaps made in Queer Porn, “This was my first trip to Vegas and my first time attending a porn awards ceremony. Two films and two websites I’d been a part of had been nominated this year. Buck Angel’s “Sexing the Transman” for best Transsexual and Educational release, Crashpadseries.com “Volume 6: Wide Open” for Best Specialty Release as well as GoodDykePorn.com and QueerPorn.TV for Best Alternative Website. This was a great year for queer porn. While none of these incredible productions took home any awards that night, I was gifted a very special opportunity. I was able to walk the red carpet at AVN alongside friends and many industry professionals I have long respected, lusted after and admired. I would never in a million years have dreamt that this would be my life!

“While getting to walk the red carpet was a huge honor to me, I didn’t realize until the day of the awards that this would be the second time a transsexual male porn performer has ever walked at the AVN Awards! Buck Angel walked with his wife in 2007, the same historic year he won TS Performer of the Year. He has always been a huge inspiration to me and for so many in and out of the porn world… The world of porn is changing, if there was any time for transsexual men to be acknowledged in the adult industry, that time is now. I think the industry and porn audiences everywhere are ready for something new. I think it’s time transsexual men received some respectful, hard-earned recognition for the hot, sexual beings we truly are!”

Canadian trans man Charlie Spats also attended the AVN Awards as a performer of QueerPornTV, a blogger for Good Queer Porn, and as the sole representative of Good Dyke Porn, a Vancouver-based queer porn company also nominated for Best Alternative Website. On his first experience to AVN he said, “The AVN Awards are weird. Both the show and Vegas in general are entirely artificial environments that reflect the polar opposite of what queer porn is all about. But the advantage to being in a space like that is that it brings us Queers closer together, and reminds us all how important our work is. All of us went home filled with new inspiration and collaborative ideas!”

Vegas was a blast and such a great stride forward for the faces and names in queer porn. As Tina Horn said on QueerPorn.TV’s blog, “We stood together as a community, as a unified front of strong-willed, open-minded, sex positive people going against the grain of the industry.”  That in itself is an awesome win, and we truly had a blast.

While the trip to Vegas proved to be an excellent bonding experience and networking opportunity across our own queer porn industry, there were few opportunities to integrate our work and experiences into the massive mainstream porn culture. It seemed that the overwhelming selection of awards show categories in fact only fall under two columns:
A) Awards That Will Give Credit To AVN’s Sponsors & Top Mainstream Figures
B) Awards That No One Cares About

Unfortunately, the category for Best Alternative Website – which both QueerPorn.tv and Good Dyke Porn were nominated for – fell under Column B. It’s no secret which column you end up on, either; at the end of the AVN Awards Show, the leftover categories are announced only by a scrolling list of winners, played as people are leaving. Transsexual performer Brittany St. Jordan spoke out about her experience as a “second class” performer, which I think majority of the queer porn team could relate to:

The fiasco started earlier that day when we went to pick up our tickets. Steve Javors, from AVN, was handing out the tickets for the talent who were going to attend the awards. I was with Jesse, who was also a nominee, and we asked for our red carpet passes. Steve said to find him at the show when we got there and he would have them. We grabbed our tickets and went off to get ready for the evening’s event.

 When we arrived there was a huge line waiting for the red carpet. As the line slowly inched along, the larger studios started arriving with their folks and were being escorted to the front of the line. This is expected and was not a surprise at all. However, there was someone behind us who asked why these people were going to the front. Steve’s reply was, “They are presenters and nominees.” That was when I informed him that Jesse and I were nominees for TS Performer of the Year and he then told us to 
wait and we would get our turn.

[...] Even though we had informed them of who we were we waited for three hours before making it to the red carpet as straight girl after straight girl was escorted to the front of the line. Once we were finished on the red carpet the handlers for AVN told us go around another line of folks and to go out into the hallway where other media were present. That line which we were told to avoid was the line for people doing interviews for Showtime and the hallway was devoid of anything except people taking 
personal photos with one another.

That being said, the queer porn industry is not one to be held back! With enough bar-trained pushing and shoving, we made our way onto the carpet, and when the media failed us, we were our own press. (That photo of me and James Darling on the red carpet was taken by Quinn Valentine, on my phone.)

So here’s the big question: Is it worth it for Queer Porn to attend the AVN Awards Show? Sure, it’s exciting that our presence grows with each year, but are we only impressing ourselves with our numbers?

As an attendee of this year’s Vegas trip and a Canadian pornographer, I can definitely say that the trip was worth it for me. I may not have sold Dave Navarro on Good Dyke Porn, but I got to solidify relationships with the community I love!

Another Year of Porn! – 2011 Recap

It’s been another incredible year for queer porn! We’ll return to the regular Weekly Updates soon, but first, let’s take a look at some of the highlights of 2011!

- NEW SITES & COMPANIES -

Madison Young’s Feminist Porn Network launched just over a year ago, starting with her collaboration with Maxine Holloway, The Woman’s POV! Since then, the Network has added Perversions of Lesbian Lust and the very new Femifist!

This was also the first full year that Courtney Trouble & Tina Horn’s QueerPorn.tv has graced the internet with its presence! The site celebrated its first anniversary just a couple of months ago with the launch of a brand new clip store and one full day of the entire site being free to non-VIP members!

With the launch of QueerPorn.tv came the first queer tube site of primarily user-uploaded content, QueerPornTube!

Sophia St. James launched her own Portland-based porn company, SSJ Entertainment! They started off the year with the launch of Twisted Getaway (which we reviewed HERE)!

T-Wood launched its sister site/company, the gender-inclusive Dolores Park Studios! Their first feature-length release, Queerly SF: Brunch Bunch was reviewed by us HERE.

Good Dyke Porn started 2011 with a road trip to Seattle, shooting two back-to-back scenes while we were there! The first featured Dylan Ryan & Sophia St. James, followed by another starring Montgomery and myself, Charlie Spats!

Several porn stars made their way to Evergreen State College in Oregon for a full week dedicated to porn-related workshops and awareness! These workshops were broadcasted live online for international viewers, with Courtney Trouble fielding questions on behalf of the internet. Brilliant!

At this point, I assumed that the film was over. Oh my, was I ever wrong.

For the finale of the film, Courtney Trouble leaves her position as director and is presented onstage. She is then joined by majority of the cast, blindfolded, and gangbanged!
